Bz and Bt: why magnetic direction matters
Read positive and negative Bz, magnetic strength and the trend over time.
Two magnetic fields meet
Earth has its own magnetic field, forming a surrounding region called the magnetosphere. The solar wind carries another field from the Sun: the interplanetary magnetic field. The way these fields meet helps determine how much energy enters Earth’s magnetic environment.
Negative Bz means southward
Bz is the north–south component of the interplanetary field in the coordinate system used for space-weather monitoring. It is measured in nanoteslas (nT). Negative Bz points southward and generally supports stronger energy transfer. Positive Bz points northward and is usually less favourable for that transfer.
Bt measures strength, Bz includes direction
Bt is the total strength of the interplanetary magnetic field, also measured in nT. Bz is only one component and can be positive or negative. A large Bt does not tell you whether the field points southward; that is why Bz is useful alongside it.
Watch the trend, not a single dip
A brief negative reading is different from a sustained southward field. The strength, duration and solar-wind speed all matter, and Earth’s response takes time. There is no single Bz value that guarantees northern lights. A positive reading also does not instantly end an existing display.
What to look for
A sustained negative Bz is generally favourable for energy transfer. Check its strength and duration alongside solar-wind speed and local viewing conditions.
